Nagaon



Nagaon is referred to as the rice bowl of Assam. It covers the geographical area of 4435.3 Sq. Km. of which 292700 Ha of land is under cultivation. As per 1991 census the total population is 1893171 comprising of 981379 male and 911792 female. A huge portion of the world famous Kaziranga National Park falls in this district. The major rivers flowing through the district are Brahmaputra, Barpani, Sonai, Kalong, Nanoi, Kopili and Jamuna.

The popular tourist places of Nagaon district are:

    * Bordowa, the place of birth of the great author, artist, dramatist, founder of Vaisnava Religion, etc. of Assam, Mahapurush Srimanta Sankardeva.
    * Pokhi Tirtha (Samaguri Bill) is the perfect place to see many species of Migratory Birds from diverse place of the world.
    * Lowkhowa is a wild life sanctuary.
    * Champawati Kunda is a famous waterfall fall.

Nagaon district is the second most populous district in Assam with 89% of the total population living in rural areas. It is located between 25º-45' to 26º -45' North Latitude and 92º -33' -6" East Longitude. The economy of the Nagaon district is mainly dependent on agriculture. The chief crops grown in the region are mustard, sugarcane, vegetables, paddy, potato, wheat, jute, and oilseeds. On the other hand, the horticultural and plantation crops of the district are betel nut, banana, pineapple, coconut, etc. The infrastructure of Nagaon is very poor which has adversely affected the industrial development of the region. The Agar perfume industry at Hojai in Nagaon earns huge revenues by exporting the perfumes to Middle East countries. The district is covered by many beels, marshy lands and swamps like Samoguri beel, Potakalong, Marikalong, Haribhanga, Jongalbalahu, Nawbhanga, and Urigadang.
