Darrang district was formed on July'1983 by transforming the former Sub-Division of Mangaldai. The major rivers that irrigate the district are Nanoi, Brahmaputra, Dhansiri Barnadi, Mangaldai, Noanodi, and Saktola. The district geographically lies between 20° 9´North to 26° 95´ North Latitude and 91° 45´ East to 92° 22´ East Longitude. The district covers a total area of 3481 sq. km. of which 174.19 sq. km is under reserved Forest. Out of the total land 1,63,309 Hectare of land is under cultivation. In general the district is mainly plain except with few small hills in the Udalguri Subdivision. According to 1991 Census, the total population of the district is 12,98,860, which is 5.79% of the state's population. Out of the total population of the district 6,70,244 are males and 6,28,616 females.
The economy of Darrang is mainly dependent on agriculture where nearly 85% of the total population is engrossed in agriculture or associated activities. Darrang district has very fertile soil ideal for cultivation of paddy, sugarcane, oilseeds, and jute. Tea is one of its major plantation crops. Horticultural products like pineapple, orange, coconut, etc. are grown in the region. Even the agricultural infrastructure is not very developed. The district lacks proper, processing units, credit, irrigation and storage facilities etc. Sericulture as a cottage industry occupies a very important place in the socio-economic life of the people of Darrang district.
