Cachar



In Assam, Cachar district is situated in the southern part. It is considered that among the districts of Assam, Cachar is one of the oldest one. The name of the district derives perhaps from a Sylhette or a Bengali word which means a small portion of land lying in the foot hills of a mountain. The other interpretation is that it may have derived from its rulers, the Kacharis.

The geographical location of Cachar is 92° 24' East to 93° 15' East Longitude and 24° 22' North to 25° 8' North Latitude. In the north of Cachar lie Jayantia and Barali hills and Mizoram is in the south. The districts of Karimganj and Hailakandi border it in the east. The former district came into existence in 1830 but in later years, Karimganj and Hailakandi were transformed into separate districts.

The total area of Cachar is 3,786 Sq. Km. It is divided into two sub-divisions. The total population of Cachar according to the census of 2001 is 14,42,141. Out of the total population, there are 7,41,580 males and 7,00,561 females in the district. The density of population is 321 per sq. Km.

Cachar district has a sound infrastructure. The location of the district is important from the strategical point of view. Communication with this district of Assam can be maintained by air, road and by rail. Kubhirgram airport is located in the district. It is linked with other parts of the state by railways and roadways.
