Jorhat district lies at the central region of Brahmaputra Valley, between 26° 46' north latitude and 96° 16' longitude. It is surrounded on the north by river Brahmaputra and on the south by the state Nagaland. Jorhat district was constituted in 1983 from the erstwhile Sibsagar District. Jorhat, Majuli and TitaborJorhat are the three Sub-divisions of Jorhat district, which is further split up into six revenue circles namely Jorhat West, Titabor, Teok, Mariani Majuli and Jorhat East, and eight development blocks namely Kaliapani Development Block, North West Development Block (Dhekorgarah), Titabor Development Block, East Jorhat Dev. Block (Selenghat), Central Jorhat Development Block (Chipahikhola), Jorhat Development Block (Baghchung), Majuli Development Block, Ujani Majuli Development Block.
