Kamrup



One of the commercially developed districts of Assam, Kamrup covers a geographical area of 2740.74 sq. km. The district of Kamrup encompasses a total population of 13.21,839 (as per 2001 census). For administrative convenience, Kamrup is further divided into Guwahati and Rangia sub districts.

The district of Kamrup in Assam boasts of a rich religious history. According to a legend, it is believed that the region was named after God Kamadev, the Lord of love. God Kamadev had to face the wrath of Lord Shiva when he distracted the latter's attention from his deep meditation due to the death of his divine consort, Goddess Durga. However after sometime, Kamamdev got back his consciousness in the ancient land of Kamrup and so the region subsequently came to be known as Kamrup.

Blessed with a fertile land, Kamrup has 1,81,608 hectares and 1,16,694 hectares of agricultural and forest land respectively. The district has fifteen tea gardens as well that produces 7,72,640 kilogram of good quality tea. The district of Kamrup also supports many small scale handicraft industries. The Sericulture Industry is one of the most developed industry that has helped to strengthen the economy of the district.

Representing the varied topography and religious fervor of the district, Kamrup is endowed with many tourist destinations. Some of the notable places of tourist interest of Kamrup are:

    * Chandubi- Blessed with the natural and scenic beauty, Chandubi attracts many tourists who are overwhelmed at the bewitching charm of the lake
    * Madan Kamdev Temple- The Madan Kamdev Temple bears relics of the rich history and the architectural skills of the bygone golden era

Easily accessible from all parts of India, Kamrup has maintained a perfect balance between industrial development and agricultural productivity.
