The district of Bongaigaon came into prominence in the year 1989, when the Assam government some areas of the districts of Goalpara and Kokrajhar for administrative convenience. The district of Bongaigaon covers a total area of 2510 sq. km which holds a population of 9,06,315. Bongaigaon shares its borders with Barpeta in the east, Kokrajhar in the west, Goalpara in the south east, and Chirang and Dhubri in the north west.
Bongaigaon derived its name from the word Bon which means wild and Gai which means cow. The local people of the district were disturbed with the large number of wild cows who would beat the cows from time to time. Thus the district came to be known as Bongaigaon.
