One of the most prominent districts of Assam, Barpeta bears relics of the rich historical legacy and cultural tradition of the bygone golden era of the region. Spread over a huge geographical area of 3,30,000 hectares, the district of Barpets holds a total population of 1642420. Blessed with a pleasant weather, the Barpeta district attracts many tourist through out the year who are overwhelmed at the natural scenic beauty of the region.

The mighty River Brahmaputra with its numerous tributaries flows through the beautiful district which makes the soil of Barpeta very fertile and suitable to grow varieties of agricultural crops. The district of Barpeta boasts of a rich cultural and traditional legacy of the region that has triggered down to the modern era.

The district of Barpeta is blessed with several traditional educational institutions that are popularly known as the Satras. The present day Satras impart a combined knowledge of modern education accompanied with the traditional dance form and music, art of sculpture, drama and any other aspect of the cultural life of the district. The Jania, Barpeta, Kanara, and Baradi are some of the notable Satras of the district.

Barpeta is endowed with many indigenous dance forms and folk songs that constitutes an important part of the rich and unique culture of the state. Some of the indigenous forms of art of the district of Barpeta are:

    * Loka Geet- Popularly known as the folk songs, the Loka Geet reflects the rich musical fervor of the district of Barpets
    * Borgeet- The Borgeet are sung in praise of the local Gods and Goddesses that fills one with an intense sense of devotion and dedication for the Supreme Being

The culturally enriched district of Barpeta attracts several tourist who are absolutely thrilled with the diverse culture and the picturesque natural surrounding of Barpeta
