Lakhimpur District is located on the Northeastern region of Assam, approximately between 26º 48' and 27º 53' north of latitude and 93º 42' and 94º 20' east of longitude. Lakhimpur District is surrounded by Sonitpur District's Gahpur sub division on the West, by Dhemaji District and Subansiri River on the east, the Siang and Papumpare District of Arunachal Pradesh on the north and. Majuli Sub Division of Jorhat District on the south. The headquarters of are at North Lakhimpur and the sub divisional headquarters are at Dhakuakhana. The seven Revenue circles of the district are:

Brahmaputra is one of the main rivers flowing through Lakhimpur District, other rivers like Subansiri, Ranganadi, and Dikrong also flow here. The District covers the geographical area of 2977 Sq km out of which maximum of the area is rural covering 2957 Sq km and just 20 sq km is urban. As per 2001 census the total population is 889,325, comprising of 455,689 males and 433,636 females. The district is covered by tropical rain forests and the various reserved forests of the region are Pava Reserve, Ranga Reserve, Dulung Reserve and Kakoi Reserve. Huge varieties of species of trees are found here namely Simul (Bombax ceiba/Salmalia Malabarica), Hollock (Terminalia Myriocarpa), Neem (Azadirachta Indica), Urium (Bichotia Jauvanica), Jutuli (Altingia excelsa), Nahar (Mesua Ferrea), Sum (Machilus), Sualu , Gomari (gmelina orborea), Sissoo (Dalbergia Sissoo), Ajhar (lagerstroemia speciosa), Silikha (Terminalia Chebula), Sopa (Magnolia) etc. The district was rich in both flora and fauna. But the increasing population and deforestation has led to the extinction of many species. If you visit the district you can see buffaloes, deer, elephants, tigers, hyenas and many species of birds in the swampy areas.
