The West Garo Hills district covers an area of 3714 Sq. Km. and lies on the western part of the state of Meghalaya.The district lies between the longitudes 90° 30' and 89° 40' East, and the latitudes of 26° and 25° 20' North. As per 2001 census, the district is home to 5, 18,390 people.
Agriculture provides the main source of livelihood followed by poultry, diary farming and bee-keeping.

West Khasi Hills district is located in the central region of Meghalaya. It is situated between 25 degrees 10' and 25 degrees 51' N latitudes and between 90 degrees 44' and 91 degrees 49' E longitudes. West Khasi Hills in Meghalaya is bordered by Ri Bhoi district on the north-east, the Kamrup district of Assam on the north-west, East Khasi Hills district on the east, Bangladesh on the south and East Garo and South Garo Hills districts on the west. Its total area is around 5,247 square kms, 23 percent of Meghalaya's total area. The total population of the district is 2,94,115 and the literacy rate is 65.64.
The closest airport is located at Guwahati in Assam, at a distance of 124 kms from Shillong. The closest railhead is located at Guwahati, at a distance of 100 kms. Taxis and buses are available from the rail station and the airport.
The majority of the people of West Khasi Hills at Meghalaya understand Khasi and therefore it is the language of communication amongst the varied people of the place. There are 22 other dialects in the district.
West Khasi Hills of Meghalaya has four major geographical units. The dense jungles of the western sector borders the Garo Hills and have a height of 600 to 900 meters. The hills of the southern sector are 150 meters high. The series of hills and ranges of the northern sector have a height of around 150 meters. The hill ranges of the central sector have an average height of around 1400 meters and represent the highest part of West Khasi Hills. The two major rivers of West Khasi Hills are the Khri and the Kynshi; both of them have quite a few tributaries.
