The West Garo Hills district covers an area of 3714 Sq. Km. and lies on the western part of the state of Meghalaya.The district lies between the longitudes 90° 30' and 89° 40' East, and the latitudes of 26° and 25° 20' North. As per 2001 census, the district is home to 5, 18,390 people.

Agriculture provides the main source of livelihood followed by poultry, diary farming and bee-keeping.

West Garo Hills
West Garo Hills is one of the biggest Meghalaya districts. It is situated in the western part of Meghalaya. It is bordered by the South Garo Hills on the south-east, the East Garo Hills district on the east, Bangladesh on the south and the Assam district called Goalpara on the north and the north-west. It is located between 90° 30' and 89° 40' E latitudes and 26° and 25° 20' N longitudes. The West Garo Hills is classified into South and West Garo Hills. Its district headquarters is Tura. After Shillong, it is the second biggest town in Meghalaya.

The West Garo Hills of Meghalaya is a hilly region with plains in the western, northern and south-western edges. The Tura Range is a major mountain range of West Garo Hills at Meghalaya. It is around 50 kms in length and runs in the east-west direction starting from Tura and ending at Siju in the district of South Garo Hills. The important mountain peaks of this range are Nokrek Peak, Tura Peak, Nengminjok Peak, Chitmang Peak and Meminram Peak. The highest of them is the Nokrek (1412 meter), which is 13 kms to the south-east of Tura. Ringgi, Kalu, Didak, Dareng and Bhogai are the important rivers of the place.

The Meghalaya Transport Corporation runs buses, which connect Tura with major places of the Garo Hills districts and Shillong.

The total area of West Garo Hills in Meghalaya is 3714 square kms. Its total population is 5,18,390, out of which 2,11,499 are literate. The majority of its people are Garos, a matrilineal tribe originating from the Tibeto-Burman tribes. The other minority tribes are the Rabhas, Hajongs, Rajbansis, Koches, Kacharis, Meches and Dalus. There is also a limited population of Nepalese, Bengalis, Assamese, Biharis and Marwaries.
