Rajouri was established by the government of the state of Jammu and Kashmir to facilitate in the development of the region. The district of Rajouri was created from the district of Poonch in the year 1968. The district of Poonch borders Rajouri in the north. Udhampur district lies to the east of Rajouri while Jammu borders the district in the south. Rajouri district shares its borders with the Mirpur area of the Kashmir occupied by Pakistan.
The district of Rajouri falls between the geographical coordinates of 32 degrees 58 minutes to 33 degrees 35 minutes north latitude and 70 degrees to 74 degrees 4 minutes east longitude. The summer capital of the state, Jammu lies in close proximity of 160 kilometers from the district. Rajouri spreads across an area of 2630 square kilometers, which is divided into seven blocks, six tehsils, seventy seven panchayats and 381 villages. The district is endowed with geographical features that are characteristic of the region. The Dhaula Dhar range lies in the northeastern frontier of the district of Rajouri. The valley has meandering brooks that flow in the district. The climate of the region varies from the sub tropical to the temperate climes. Monsoonal showers often rise to hailstorms in the northern section of the district.
The district of Rajouri has a distinctive history. The remnants of the various structures built in the Mughal era are reminiscent of the glorious past of Rajouri. The district fell en route the Kashmir Valley, which was often visited by the Mughal rulers.
Named after the Rajauri or Rajapuri town and carved out of Poonch District, Rajauri District of west Jammu & Kashmir came into existence in the year 1967. Poonch, Udhampur and Jammu districts border Rajauri District, which occupies an area of 2630 sq. km.
According to the 2001 Census Report Poonch District has recorded a population of 4.876 lakhs. People mainly raise paddy, maize, wheat and fodder while some are involved in rearing livestock and allied industries.
Rajauri, with its rugged mountains is dotted with beautiful water bodies. The eminent tourist spots include Rajouri fort, Gurudwara Chhati Padshahi, Balidan Bhavan, Rama Temple Jama Masjid ,Shiv Mandir, Dhanidhar Fort, Law Bali and Thanna Mani among others.
