Leh is among the most important districts of Jammu and Kashmir. It is a part of the greater area of Ladakh.

The total area covered by the district of Leh is 45110 sq. km. It is considered to be the largest district in India in terms of land area. The district is situated between seventy-five degree to eighty degree East longitude and thirty-two degree to thirty-six degree North latitude.

The Leh district of Jammu and Kashmir is surrounded by lahul Spiti of Himachal Pradesh in the south east, the country of China in the northern and eastern parts and Pakistan occupied Kashmir in the west.

The total area of Leh district is divided into six blocks. There are about 112 villages in this district beside the Leh town. The total population of this district of the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir is approximately 1.17 lacs.

The climate of Leh is combination of both arctic and desert type. Being situated in the rain shadow side of the Himalayas it receives dry monsoon winds. Thus the Ladakh region of Jammu and Kashmir is also considered to be a cold desert.

The annual precipitation rate in Leh is very low. There is a wide fluctuation in temperature. The region receives frequent dust storms in the afternoon. The nature of the soil here is thin, porous and sandy. The district is almost devoid of any natural vegetation.

The district of Leh is popularly known as the Roof of the World because of its high altitude.
