Spanning over a total of 1486 sq kms, Khagaria is subdivided into two divisions namely Khagaria and Ghoghri. It has a total population of 12, 76,677. With a population density of 859, the district has a total cultivable land of 1, 04000 hectares. As per 2001 census, the district has 890 females for every 1000 males and a literacy rate of 41.56%. A part of Munger division, Khagaria is intersected by Ganga and Koshi rivers.
Khagaria is linked to other cities via NH 31. Apart from Khagaria Junction through which New Delhi-Guwahati line passes by, Umeshnagar, Mansi, Olapur, are some of the other railway stations in the district.
87147 hectares (1998-99) of land is irrigated in the district with paddy, maize and wheat. Horticulture and Dairy are the two prime economic activities. Also, due to abundance of cattle the place earns its revenue through animal husbandry.
With no significant historical importance, there are only a few places of attractions in Khagaria. Among them Katyayani Asthan and Ajgaibinath Mahadeo are worth mentioning.
Previously considered as a educationally backward region Khagaria today boasts of 536 primary schools, 160 middle schools, 42 high schools, eight colleges, one Kendriya Vidyalaya, one Govt. Girls' School and one Navodaya Vidyalaya with a total enrollment ratio of 70.07%.
Created in 1943-44, Khagaria has the potential to grow as one of the advanced and successful district of Bihar.
