Location and Orientation of Porbandar
The city is located on the southeast coast of Gujarat between Veraval and Dwarka, the two other important cities of the state. According to the 2001 Census, Porbandar has a population of 133,083. The people of Porbandar are very simple and cordial. The four major communities of Porbandar are Maher, Kharva, Lohana and Bardai Brahman. The Maher community belongs to the Barda and Sarth regions whereas the Kharva community belongs to the central city region. Farming is the main occupation of the Maher community, while for Kharva it is fishing and the Lohanas and the Bardai Brahmans are the business class section of Porbandar.
With the presence of sea shore, lakes, rivers, lush forests, hills and valleys the city has emerged as one of the most affluent regions in natural resource.
History of Porbandar
The erstwhile town of Pauravekal, which later came to be known as Sudamapuri, after the childhood friend of Lord Krishna, is a popular historical destination of India. One of the prosperous ports of the Mughal period, the port was attacked by the Portuguese in the year 1531 AD. Later with the signing of the Walker Treaty in 1807 AD the disputes were resolved and the refurbishment works of the city started.
The city is well linked with road, rail and air. With a multitude of attractions housed in and around the city, Porbandar has emerged as one of the popular tourist destinations of Gujarat.
