Lawngtlai
One of the important districts of Mizoram, Lawngtlai is surrounded by the Saiha and Lunglei districts of the state, Bangladesh in the west and Myanmar in the south. The geographical location of the Lawngtlai District is between East longitude 92º30' and 93º and North Longitude 21º58' to 22º60'.
Covering an area of 2258 square kilometers, the Lawngtlai district has a population of 73,685. The population figure is in accordance to the 2001 census. The Chakma and Lai are the two tribal communities that form the main ethnic groups of the district. Agriculture is the main occupation of the district of Lawngtlai. One of the major administrative districts of the state, Lawngtlai was formed in 1998. The Lawngtlai Town is the district head-quarter.
The district of Lawngtlai enjoys a moderate climate with heavy rainfall during the months of May and September. The average rainfall in the district is around 285 centimeters annually. Apart from the Lais and Chakmas, other tribal groups like the Pang and Bawm are also present in the district. The tribal people have their own art and culture. The tribal dances like Sarlamkai, Chawnglaizawnh and Pawhlohtawh are quite popular and they are performed during the festivals.
