The district of Latehar in Jharkhand was culled out of Palamu district on 4th April, 2001: since 1924, Latehar had been part of the district of Palamu in Jharkhand. Latehar is the headquarters of the Latehar district and is the seat of the Deputy Commissioner.
The Latehar district was named after a small village named Latehar, on the Ranchi Daltonganj Road. Moreover, Latehar is located in the north-western part of the territory of Jharkhand and is surrounded by Lohardaga, Ranchi, Palamu, Chatra and Gumla.
