Chatra
Chatra, one of the districts of Jharkhand, lies in the extreme north western region of the state. The district is surrounded by Gaya of Bihar and Palamu in the south, Hazaribagh district and a part of Gaya of Bihar in the north, a part of Hazaribagh in the east and Palamu and Ranchi in the west. The headquarters of this district is situated in Chatra town.
History of Chatra
Chatra of Jharkhand has played very prominent role in the history of the region. In the era of Magadhan Empire, it was used by Samudragupta to attack the kingdom of Kaushal. Later during the rule of Tughlaq, the district of Chatra in Jharkhand came in direct touch with the Delhi Sultanate.
But the most important historical event that brought the district of Chatra at Jharkhand into the history books was the noted Mutiny of 1857 in which the Battle of Chatra was the most fierce and important. The fight was fought near Phansi Talaab in which the rebellions were suppressed. Subedar Jai Mangal Pandey was hanged in this district.
