The district of Kanker was formerly a part of Bastar district. Kanker as a district came into existence in the year 1999. The four other districts of Chhattisgarh that surround Kanker are Durg, Bastar, Rajnandgaon. The geographical location of Kanker is from 80 degree 48 min north to 81 degree 48 min north latitudes and from 20 degree 6 min to 20 degree 24 min east longitude. Kanker district occupies an area of 5285.01 sq km. The district is located in the southern part of Chhattisgarh state. The head quarter of the district is Raipur. According to the census report of 2001, the total population of Kanker is 651333. The population density of the district per square kilometer is 100.

Kanker is a district known for the red colored soil. The riverine plain land is fertile. The main occupation of the men of Kanker is agriculture. Crops like paddy, wheat, pulses and sugarcane are cultivated. Vegetables and fruits are also grown here. In Kanker mineral deposits of iron, garnet and quartzite have been found but mining has not started as yet. But Kanker produces a good amount of granite of white and black variety. Stresses of gold deposit have also been discovered in this district.
The local people of Kanker celebrate different festivals. They take part in the different cultural programs during these festivals. Outsiders from the district are also welcome to participate in these local festivities.
