The district of Dhamtari is located at 20 42' North latitude and 81 33'East Longitude in the newly formed state of Chattisgarh in India. The word 'Dhamtari' literally translates as the fertile plains. Dhamtari shares its border with the capital city of Raipur in the north and east, the state of Orissa in the south and the district of Kanker in west. The district headquater is situated in Dhamtari itself.
At an elevation of 305 meter above the sea level, the district of Dhamtari in Chattisgarh covers an area of 2029 sq. kms. The district is home to a population of 7,03,569 of which 3,50,962 are male and 3,52,607 are females. The literacy rate is 75.16 % , which includes 88.76 % of the male population and 63.60 % of the female population.
The Mahanadi River with its tributaries Kharun, Sendur, Pairy, Shivnath, Sondur and Joan drain the district of Dhamtari giving its high fertility. Mahanadi is known by different local names like Kankannadi, Neelotpala,Chitrotpala, Mandavahini and Jairath in different regions of Dhamtari. The district is served by National highway 43 that runs from Raipur, the capital of Chattisgarh at a distance of 78 kms from Dhamtari. NH - 43 continues through Chattisgarh till Vijayanagaram in Andhra Pradesh.
The economic scenario of Dhamtari is dominated by wheat, paddy and rice mils. In Dhamtari alone there are a whopping 106 rice mills and the number is increasing. The very fertile plains of Dhamtari facilitate the high growth of paddy, which is the principal crop. Dhamtari also houses some of the major hydro - electric projects of India.
