The district has a population of 19,62,700 with a literacy rate of 78% (census 2001).
The total cropped area of the district, till 2003-04, was 4,18,000 hectares. Wheat, rice, maize and bajra are the major crops of the district. The place also has 1761 operational factories that are one of the main sources of income generation.
