Abode of the Chakhesang and Pochury tribes, the district of Phek covers a geographical area of 2026 sq km. The state of Manipur bounds the district in the South and Kohima in the West. Myanmar bounds Phek in the East and Zunheboto and Tuensang bound Mon in the North. This South-eastern district of Nagaland houses a population of 148,246 as per 2001 Census.
Primarily, an agrarian district, the people of Phek also earns their livelihood from horticulture, fishery, weaving, wood carving and products made of bamboo.
