Jharsuguda district was established on 1st January 1994 on the western part of Orissa on the State High way No. 10. It is located between 21.82° north longitude and 84.1° East Latitude and at a height of 700-750 feet above mean sea level. It encompasses an area of 2,081 Sq. km. According to 2001 Census the total population of the district is 5,09,716 comprising of 2,61,941 males and 2,47,775 females.

The district of Jharsuguda is rich in minerals deposits, especially coal. In the state of Orissa, Jharsuguda is one of the most urbanized and industrially developed districts. It is has very well connections with all parts of the country by rail and road. It is located at a distance of 515 K.M. from Calcutta, the capital of West Bengal and 616 Km. from Nagpur. The district also has an airport that was established during World War II. The highest temperature recorded in Jharsuguda district during the summer is 46.7ยบ Centigrade and the average rainfall is 1527 mm. The river 'IB' and the river 'Vheden' flow through the Jharsuguda district.

The Jharsuguda district of Orissa is a popular tourist destination. The region is adorned with a number of places to visit. The Koilighughar waterfall (Lakhanpur) and Adyaswambhu pitha are the ideal places to go for picnic. Nearby there are several places of historical importance like ruins of Hill Forts of Ulapgarh, rock painting and lithography of Bikramkhol, Ushakothi cave and Kolabira Fort. The district has a number of temples namely Padmasini Temple of Padampur, Ancient Siva Shrine of Jhadeswar Temple, Ramchandi, an ancient Shaktipitha, Shree Pahadeswar Temple, Shiva Shrine of Mahadebpali, Shree Pahadeswar Temple etc.
