Sonipat



Sonipat, located in the south-eastern part of Haryana, came into existence in 1972. Formerly Sonipat was a part of Rohtak district. Sonipat gets mentioned in Panini's Ashtadhyayi. It is also supposed to be one of the five Prasths or towns, as mentioned in Mahabharata. The number of sub-divisions of Sonipat is three. They are Sonipat, Ganaur and Gohana. Among which Sonipat is the largest Tehsil. The town of Sonipat acts as the district headquarter.

According to the census of 2001, the total population of Sonipat is 12, 78,830, among which 6, 95, 314 are male and 5, 83, 516 female. The total area of Sonipat is 2,13,080 hectare. The literacy rate of Sonipat is 73.71 per cent.

Among the educational institutes of Sonipat, some are:

    * I.T.I Ganaur
    * I.T.I. Gohana
    * Samaj Kayan Sabha
    * Govt. Institute of Engineering
    * C. R. State College of Engineering

The economy of Sonipat is mainly agricultural. Among the widely cultivated crops, some are rice, wheat, barley, pulses. Vegetables and cotton are also grown. Horticulture, fishery and animal husbandry are also practiced along with agriculture in Sonipat.

Sonipat is connected with other parts of Haryana by roadway and railway.

    * Shri Ram Mandir
    * Sri Gurunanak Gurudwara
